Bathroom Planning Guidelines

The National kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) has developed a list of bathroom planning guidelines that help both bath design professionals and homeowners who are designing a bath remodel on their own-whether or not expansion is an option. Here are some of those guidelines. Follow them as best as you can in your situation.

1a. Doorways sat least 32 inches wide and not more than 24 inches deep in the direction of travel.

1b. The clear space at a doorway must be measured at the narrowest point.

1c. walkways should be a minimum of 36 inches wide.

2. Clear floor space at least the width of the door on the push side and a large clear floor space on the pull side for maneuvering to open, close, and pass through the doorway.

3. A minimum clear floor space of 30*48 inches either parallel or perpendicular should be provided at the lavatory.

4a. A minimum clear floor space of 48*48 inches provided in front of the toilet with 16 inches of clear floor space extending to each side of the fixture’s centerline.

4b. Up to 123 inches of the 48 * 48 inches of clear floor space can extend under the lavatory when total access to a knee space is provided.

5. A minimum clear floor space of 48 * 48 inches from the front of the bidet should be provided.

6a. A minimum clear floor space of 60 * 30 inches at the bathtub for a parallel approach.

6b. A minimum clear floor space of 60 * 48 inches at the bathtub for a perpendicular approach.

7. A Minimum clear floor space at a shower less than 60 inches wide should be 36 inches deep * shower width + 12 inches. A shower 60 inches wide or greater requires a space of 36 inches deep * shower width.

8. The clear floor space required at each fixture may overlap.

9. Turning space of 180 degrees planned for in the bathroom. Minimum diameter of 60 inches for 360-degree turns and/or T-turn with space of 36 *36 *60 inches.

10. A minimum clear floor space of 30 * 48 inches is required beyond the door swing in the bathroom.

11. For more than one vanity, one may be 30-34 inches and another 34-42 inches high.

12. Knees pace provided at the lavatory 27 inches above the floor at the front edge and 30 inches wide.

13. The bottom edge of the mirror over the lavatory should be a maximum of 40 inches above the floor if it is titled.

14. The Minimum clear floor space from the centerline of the lavatory to any side wall is 15 inches

15. The minimum clearance between two bowls in the lavatory center is 30 inches, centerline to centerline.

16. In an enclosed shower, the minimum usable interior dimensions are 34 * 34 inches measured wall to wall.

17. Showers should include a bench or seat that is 17-19 inches above the floor and a minimum of 15 inches deep.

18. A 60-inch shower requires a 32-inch entrance. If the shower is 42 inches deep, 36 inches is required.

19. Shower doors must open into the bathroom.

20. No steps at the tub or shower area. Safety rails should be installed to facilitate transfer.

21. All showerheads equipped with a pressure-balance/temperance regulator or temperature-limiting device.

22a. Shower controls are accessible from inside and outside the fixture and located between 38-48 inches above the floor and offset toward the room.

22b. Tub controls accessible from inside and outside the fixture and located between the tub rim and 33 inches above the floor, below the grab bar and offset toward room.

23a. A minimum 16-inch clearance from the centerline of the toilet or bidet to any obstruction on either side.

23b. For adjacent toilet sand bidet installation, the 16-inch minimum clearance to all obstructions should be maintained.

24. The toilet-paper holder installed within reach of person sweated on the toilet, slightly in front of the edge of the toilet and centered 26 inches above the floor.

25. Compartmentalized toilets areas should be minimum of 36 * 36 inches with a swing-out door or pocket door.

26. Walls reinforced to receive grab bars in the tub, shower, and toilet areas.

27. Storage for toiletries, linens, grooming, and general bathroom supplies provided 15-48 inches above the floor.

28. Storage for soap , towels, and personal items should be installed within reach of person seated on bidet or toilet ort within 15-48 inches above the floor.
